Description
The Gardiner Shop collaborated with illustration artist Natalie Czerwinski to create an exclusive greeting card featuring the Earthenware Collection from the 14th to 18th Century. Earthenware is a type of ceramic that is fired at a low temperature and not vitrified. It has opaque bodies and are glazed to make them impervious to liquids. There are different types of earthenware to distinguish their bodies, glazes and decoration. Tin-glazed earthenware produced in Italy, France, and England is known as maiolica, faïence, and delftware. It first appeared in the 9th Century in present-day Iraq, involving the addition of ashes of tin to a lead glaze creating an opaque white surface for decoration in emulation of Chinese porcelain. Throughout the next five centuries, knowledge of tin-glazing spread throughout the Middle East and the Mediterranean. The movement of objects and people further prompted its dissemination to Italy and Northern Europe.
