Artist Statement:

Scratchboard lends itself beautifully to tell the story between animal and human connections.  Animals expose the transparency of innocence and the authenticity of emotion.  Humans devote much of their time to masking their essence and true selves due to vulnerability.  A playful quality shows that unimaginable and unreasonable can become sensible and absolute.  The effervescent shows the impression of ingenious.  I use satire with my animals to expose human folly.  I want to connect the viewer to the untainted spirit that lies within and take them back to the unlimited imagination of childhood. – Lisa Martini-Dunk

Lisa scratches her illustration on the scratchboard.  The scratchboard has a layer of white clay on the bottom and a layer of black Indian ink on top.  As you scratch it begins to highlight the illustration versus darkening.  Once the illustration is completed, Lisa uses watercolour inks and sprays with a sealant on top.

About The Artist

L'immaginaria: Lisa Martini-Dunk

Lisa Martini-Dunk is a scratchboard artist and printmaker.  She studied and graduated with Honours at the University of Guelph in the Fine Art program, and the Creative Arts and Graphic Design program at Georgian College.  It was at this stage she moved from acrylic painting towards scratchboard art and printmaking. Lisa’s scratchboard artworks come from her adoration of fairytale books given to her by her grandmother and father.  Gaining a deep appreciation of non-existent worlds where anything impossible was possible.  Her illustrations are satirical using animals to expose human folly.  The intention is to connect with the viewer and tapping into untainted imagination of childhood that lies within. Lisa Martini-Dunk is presently based in Peterborough, Ontario where she continues to illustrate on scratchboard.
