Description
The Nihonga feature beautifully patterned florals and motifs. The term Nihonga came into use during the Meiji period (1868-1912) to distinguish traditional Japanese-style from Western-style painting. It involves the use of charcoal, mineral pigments, shell white and, occasionally gold leaf on washi (rise or hemp paper) or silk. The effect is a texture and luminosity not seen in Western style painting.
