Description
Gillian Preston creates these works by hand-blowing glass and then breaking the plates up. Her glass wearables line, “Broken Plates,” gets it’s name from this technique. Preston’s background in drawing helps inform the shapes the glass takes sometimes. However, Preston also is inspired by the organic breaking lines of the glass, and uses these too. She then polishes the glass off and assembles the pieces into dynamic pieces of jewelry such as this one.
This sculptural series of glass wearables is an excuse to experiment with new textures and materials, exploring the more tactile experiences one might only have once deviating from a two dimensional format. The work plays with form and light by interacting with the contours of the body. These translucent terrains use repetition to create their undulating forms, refracting the light and hugging the body.
Care & Use: Glass jewelry is durable, scratch resistant, easy to clean, and safe for daily wear. However, certain care must be taken while the jewelry is not in use. Here are a few tips that will extend the life of your glass wearables.
- Practice latching chains over a soft surface until you are comfortable putting a piece on and taking a piece off by yourself.
- Place in a location where it will remain undisturbed after each wear
- When cleaning tarnished findings, avoid using hot liquids
