Description

Arlene Kushnir’s creative process involves historical methods used through the ages.  She first shapes and trims each form on a potter’s wheel, and once it is leather hard she carves in intricate patterns on the surface.  After bisque firing, she hand paints with different glazes and fires in an electric kiln, twice at a high temperature.  The geometric patterns you see in her works reflect the world we live in.  Where we are interconnected and dependent on one another. Both functional and decorative each piece is carefully hand crafted and one-of-a-kind.

About The Artist

Arlene Kushnir

Arlene Kushnir has been making ceramic work for over 30 years in downtown Toronto. After completing her post graduate degree in the History of Art, she took an evening pottery class.  This inspired her to attend a full time ceramics program. Initially Arlene shared a studio with other ceramic artists. However, when studio partner Gloria Richmond passed away, she gave the entire studio equipment to two young ceramic artists, Jenanne Longman and Dawn Petticrew.  As a result, Arlene set up a her own studio space in her basement of the house and continues to practice her craft.
